The MARE project has developed an innovative methodology based on satellite data to provide a comprehensive view of drought and crop water requirements for the irrigation communities of Aigües Segarra-Garrigues and Terra Alta.
Using data from NASA’s SMAP and Landsat satellites since 2015 alongside advanced processing algorithms, maps featuring a new drought index and weekly estimates of agricultural soil water content have been generated at a 100 m spatial resolution. These maps make it possible to anticipate water availability for crops and analyze soil water status on a weekly basis relative to the 10-year historical average.
Additionally, soil temperature and moisture maps at a high spatial resolution of 5 m have been created using Artificial Intelligence techniques to fuse data from the Government of Catalonia’s Menut nanosatellite with Earth Observation data from Sentinel-3 (EU Copernicus program), SMOS (ESA), and SMAP (NASA). These maps provide a precise, plot-scale view of water status, identifying moisture differences between fields and surrounding pathways to optimize water resource management.
isardSAT has developed algorithms to estimate soil moisture and drought indices at high spatial and temporal resolution.
